Youth Services
Ages 13 to 17
Adolescence is an exciting stage of development filled with significant changes in physical, emotional and cognitive growth. Teens are managing new responsibilities, developing their identity, and taking significant steps toward independence. The journey through adolescence is an exciting adventure of emotional highs and lows. All of these changes can make frequent mood swings and psychological challenges common.
Our therapy services are designed to help and support youth who are struggling with life’s demands as well as mental health issues. We can offer support to adolescents who are struggling with family stressors, school challenges, grief and loss, anger management, relationship problems, identity issues, and life transitions. Specialized training also equips us to treat neurodevelopmental and clinical diagnoses, including ADHD, mood and anxiety disorders, personality disorders, PTSD, and substance misuse.
The goal of therapy is to help adolescents understand themselves better and resolve problematic beliefs, behaviours, feelings, sensations, thinking, or relationships. Therapy with youth can take various forms but will ultimately be guided by the youth and their preferred approach to treatment. Some youth prefer to have their parents highly involved in treatment and some prefer to be more independent. This will be negotiated between the therapist and the youth and parents. Several factors may determine the best approach, such as level of maturity, the severity of the problem, and a consensus among parents and teens. Together, we will develop a treatment plan that suits the adolescent’s goals and motivation, that is also acceptable to parents.
Parenting support can be provided as part of individual therapy with youth if appropriate. If parents are looking for their own mental health support, without their youth receiving services, it would be preferable to then access adult services.
Youth assessment services are offered to help adolescents gain a deeper understanding of themselves and to guide treatment. Specialized training offers us the opportunity to assess and diagnose a variety of disorders.
** We currently offer psychoeducational assessments only at this time.
